Help us record curlew in Nidderdale

In 2025, we’re excited to launch a new app to help us learn more about curlew. We’d like your help to record sightings of curlew while you are out and about in Nidderdale National Landscape.

The aims of the project are to:

  • Increase our understanding of curlew distribution across Nidderdale National Landscape.
  • Engage local people in learning more about curlew in this environment.
  • Help us assess where future conservation efforts might best be focused.
  • Be able to offer support to landowners regarding nest protection and curlew conservation.

All are welcome to take part, though we are particularly keen to engage people living and working in the area such as farmers, landowners and land managers. Sightings can be submitted in real-time on a mobile phone or tablet. Alternatively, you can send in data via a website.

To submit sightings using the app

Download the Coreo app from your app store: iOS (Apple) or Android (Google Play)

When presented with the sign in screen, on first use select Got a code?

To join the Nidderdale Curlews project enter GI-659584, and then create a user profile.

Adding a record:

From the home screen (map), click on the plus sign to add a record. You can add a sighting of curlew/s or of a nest. Once you have located the sighting, answer the questions on the form as prompted.

Help is available within the app and the forms, providing more information about curlew identification and behaviour.

To submit sightings through the website

If you don’t have a smartphone, you can submit sightings via the coreo.app website.

You can also read our detailed step by step instructions on how to submit a sighting.

Important note:

Curlew can be very sensitive to disturbance. Never approach nests just to collect data.  Only record information obtained from a distance, through lawful activity, or with a license.

Unless you have permission to be on the land, please only record from a public right of way.
