Volunteer opportunities

There are a whole host of opportunities for volunteering at Nidderdale National Landscape.

Thank you for your interest! We are currently unable to accept any new volunteers due to a recent increase in demand. We’re delighted that you’re interested though so please do submit the volunteer enrolment form and we will put you on a waiting list. As soon as there is space we will be in touch.

Find out more about our volunteer roles below and see which fits with your interests and the amount of time you have to offer.

“In an area like Nidderdale the opportunities for volunteering are almost unlimited but the National Landscape offers a range of interests that few can match. I’ve learned a lot about conservation of the countryside and about birds and wildlife generally. The people I’ve worked with whether volunteers or working experts have all been friendly and helpful and no matter what the weather, we get a lot of laughs. If you like fresh air and exercise and making new friends, this is for you.” – Tony Knowles, volunteer

Volunteer roles

Conservation volunteer

Our conservation volunteers are a hands-on group.  The volunteers meet every Tuesday to carry out practical conservation tasks across the National Landscape.  Tasks include woodland management, scrub clearance, footpath repair, pond restoration, and fencing.  No experience needed – we provide the tools and training.  Read the conservation volunteer blog to learn more!

Dry stone walling volunteer

Our walling group is a team of passionate volunteers.  The group meets every Wednesday to build, repair and restore dry stone walls in the National Landscape.   Whether an experienced dry stone waller or a complete novice, we would be delighted for you to join us.  No experience needed – we provide training.  Read the walling volunteer blog to learn more!

Surveys and research volunteer

Our volunteers involved in surveying and researching contribute to the conservation and protection of habitats and species across the National Landscape.  Whether you are a trained botanist or simply have an interest in the Yorkshire countryside, we would be thrilled to hear from you.  Training and support is provided, previous experience is not always needed.

Heritage volunteer

We regularly support local heritage groups to carry out a range of projects, from archaeological digs and site surveys to helping with heritage open days  and desk based research.  If you are interested in getting involved, please get in touch.  No experience needed – we provide training.
