Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal

Cistercian Abbey, elegant Georgian water garden and medieval deer park of such heritage importance it has been declared a World Heritage Site.

A vast and important National Trust site covering 323 hectares. It includes the most complete remains of a Cistercian Abbey, and more than 10 historic buildings, including a beautiful Victorian church and only surviving Cistercian corn mill.

There is also a medieval deer park, several ornamental lakes and intricately designed landscapes. Studley Royal Water Garden, created by John Aislabie, is part of the site and one of England’s most important 18th Century water gardens.

There are a range of organised activities throughout the year for all ages, including walks, guided tours and special evening events.

Where: between Pateley Bridge and Ripon on the B6265 (HG4 3DY)

Opening times: vary but generally the Abbey and Water Garden is open from 10am to 6pm (10am to 5pm in winter) and the deer park from 7am to 9pm. See website for full details.
