Saving Nidderdale’s Priority Ponds – Assessing Freshwater Diversity

Wednesday 29th June 2022, 12pm to 1pm

For this session we will be focusing on basic monitoring techniques for surveying ponds so that we can make an assessment of the waterbodies diversity. Pond monitoring can take many forms and can tell us different things about the pond so we’ll look at examples of different types of monitoring, for example monitoring change over time, using standardised methodologies and undertaking detailed surveys to help make informed management decisions for the species present.

We’ll look at a quick risk assessment which can be used to identify which ponds are more likely to be safe to manage without survey information, and which ponds are at far greater risk. There is a common belief that pond management is about ACTION: pulling out vegetation, dredging sediment and cutting down trees. In reality, good pond management is more considered. Often, the most crucial of all management tasks is to restrain the natural enthusiasm to ‘get stuck in’ and to redirect towards the more important process of surveying and understanding the pond.
