Dark sky discovery sites

The National Landscape now features four official dark sky discovery sites.

These sites are designated for their accessibility and are officially recognised as excellent places to stargaze.

You don’t need fancy equipment, just a pair of binoculars, warm clothing, a warming flask and open mind!

Thruscross

A tranquil reservoir that’s just 15 minutes from Pateley Bridge, but feels far away from civilisation.

Scar House Reservoir

Situated at the head of Nidderdale, wild and beautiful, remote and peaceful. Scar House Reservoir has a 4 mile bridleway loop and crosses both dams at the top of the valley.

Fewston

In the middle of the Washburn Valley, Fewston Reservoir offers a popular walker’s spot that plunges into darkness, with good car parking and public facilities.

Toft Gate

The Toft Gate Lime Kiln, a largely intact piece of industrial heritage, is two miles from Pateley Bridge. The car park is a Dark Sky Discovery Site due to its prominent position on the top of Greenhow Hill.
